Daily Prayer for May 23rd, 2021
Good Sunday, God—thank you! 😊
Your Word in the Bible speaks of many oils used for a variety of things. Frankincense is the king of oils used as a central component of the holy incense, medicine, and currency—a gift from the wise men to baby Jesus. Myrrh was mentioned in the scriptures over 150 times, was an ointment, incense, an embalming ingredient—and skin beauty, but mostly used a part of Holy Anointing per the Holy Bible. Cinnamon, used to clean air, kill mold and act as natural medicine. King Solomon used Cedar wood to build your Holy temple, as was Jesus’ cross made of either that, or cypress. It was also used as a skin treatment and thought to bring wisdom. Spikenard used to anoint Jesus just days before His death and resurrection. Calamus, used in perfumes and incense, and was used to anoint the priests in the temple. The Rose of Sharon is not a “rose” but instead similar to the hibiscus or tulip (also a saffron source). Galbanum is the main ingredient of the holy incense used in the heart of the temple. Interestingly, although galbanum itself has a somewhat foul odor unless burned with other sweet-smelling oils in sacred fragrance, it has the most beautiful scent and was thought to balance the emotions. Cypress is a symbol of strength, security, and prosperity. Sandalwood is referred to as “aloes” and is called one of the oils of joy and gladness, along with frankincense, myrrh, and cedarwood. Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea brought sandalwood (aloes) and myrrh to bury Jesus. Hyssop, used as a ceremonial cleansing of people and houses. Hyssop appeared at Jesus’ crucifixion when the Roman soldiers offered Jesus a drink of wine vinegar on a sponge at the end of a stalk of hyssop. Cassia oil is similar to cinnamon used for holy anointing. Olive oil was a daily commodity for the children of Israel. The oil honored both you, God and men. Did I get that right? Thank you, Father, for all the unique and sweet gifts that you give. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh,
aloes, and cinnamon.
24 and 500 of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil.
14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch.
34 The Lord said to Moses, “Take sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum, sweet spices with pure frankincense (of each shall there be an equal part),
13 And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.
